Pope Francis’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, according to the Vatican.
The Holy See Press Office released a statement on Tuesday confirming these details.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will lead the Mass, which will include Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests from around the world, the statement said.
The statement also mentioned that the funeral will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio. Pope Francis’s body will then be taken to St. Peter’s Basilica and later to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for burial. Before the funeral, the Pope’s coffin will be moved from the Casa Santa Marta chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, will oversee the transfer of the body on Wednesday, April 23, starting with a prayer at 9:00 AM. The procession will go through Santa Marta Square and the Square of the Roman Protomartyrs, as stated by the Holy See Press Office.
The procession will then exit through the Arch of the Bells into St. Peter’s Square and enter the Vatican Basilica through the central door. At the Altar of the Confession, the Cardinal Camerlengo will conduct the Liturgy of the Word, after which people can begin paying their respects to the Pope’s body.
It was previously confirmed by the Vatican that Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta, located within Vatican City.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced Pope Francis’s death from the Casa Santa Marta on Monday morning.
Farrell stated that the Pope passed away at 7:35 a.m.
